Two post-doctoral positions on CMS and PhD positions

       in supersymmetry phenomenology

The Particle Physics Group of the Vrije Universiteit Brussel, member of the international CMS collaboration, is advertising two post-doctoral positions to work on top quark physics and/or searches beyond the Standard Model, and one or more Ph.D. positions on the phenomenological research of supersymmetry.

The Inter-University Institute for High Energies or IIHE (ULB-VUB), situated in Brussels, consists of experimental particle physics groups from the Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB) and the Université Libre de Bruxelles (ULB). About 25 of its members are currently involved in the CMS experiment at CERN and the IIHE was one of the initial institutes contributing to the construction of the CMS Tracker. The physics analysis activities are focused around areas in top group physics and searches for new phenomena, for example supersymmetry.  Recently we have initiated a collaboration with our colleagues in particle physics theory, resulting in a phenomenology group with focus on supersymmetry. We also host one of the two Belgian TIER-2 sites.

Post-doctoral positions in CMS

We seek to fill two post-doctoral positions by excellent individuals with a background in experimental particle physics at colliders. The successful candidates will strengthen our research effort in the domains of top quark physics and its interplay with the search and study of supersymmetric phenomena. Besides an outstanding research record, qualities to work in a team and possible experience to supervise Ph.D. students are important. As usual in experimental particle physics, the candidate is also expected to take responsibilities in operational duties towards the CMS collaboration.

Postdoctoral applicants should have (or soon complete) a Ph.D. in physics and have relevant expertise to be efficient in the functions described above. The positions are initially for two years with the possibility of an extension of one year. Interested candidates should send their scientific curriculum vitae and a letter of motivation and arrange for two letters of recommendation to be sent to the address below. The selection will start in September 2010, and the positions will remain open until suitable candidates are found. The starting date is flexible.

More information and informal inquiries can be made via the staff members of the CMS team at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel: Freya Blekman, Jorgen D’Hondt, Stefaan Tavernier, Walter Van Doninck.

PhD positions in phenomenology

To strengthen our phenomenology activities and create a successful collaboration between theory and experiment we also search for one or more PhD students (cfr. website). Openings are available for both experimentalists and theorists, in each case with an interest in LHC phenomenology and in working on common th/exp projects. These PhD student positions are normally for 4 years, covering the full period to finish a PhD project. Detailed information on the profile of these functions and the procedure to apply can be found in the Research Project on the website.

Application

Interested postdoctoral candidates should send their scientific curriculum vitae, together with two letters of recommendation and a letter of motivation to:
